Frequent urination, excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss, and becoming increasingly tired and ill are the typical symptoms of high blood sugar.
Adults can be misdiagnosed as having type 2 diabetes because of a lack of knowledge that type 1 diabetes can start at any age. If diet, exercise, and oral medication are not keeping blood sugars under control, an endocrinologist can test for anti-GAD antibodies (which are present in type 1 diabetes) and fasting C-peptide levels (which measure how much insulin the pancreas is producing) to determine if someone has type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
