Nonprofit Transparency

We wanted to see which type 1 diabetes nonprofits were accepting money from the “Big 3” insulin manufacturers (Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi) to determine if their messaging about the insulin affordability crisis in the U.S. might be compromised. We picked well-known nonprofits that, as part of their mission, have pledged to educate, research, or advocate for people with type 1 diabetes.

We’ve used their 2018 tax returns to visualize where nonprofits are getting money and how they spend it. We also list all of the sponsors that they have disclosed, though not all list the amount of money received from each sponsor.

We believe it’s important to understand where these organizations get their funding and how they spend it to see potential conflicts of interest in how they educate, research, and advocate for people with type 1 diabetes. Our hope is that by compiling all of this information in one place, people can better support the ones that best align with their values and use their voices to appeal to others for change.

“It’s clear that more transparency in this space is vitally important.”

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.)
